1. Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and 2nd Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo met with Nicaraguan
Foreign Minister Santos Lopez, visiting Korea to attend the High-Level Forum on Korea-LAC (Latin
America and Caribbean) Partnership, on November 12 to discuss issues of mutual interest.

2. In the Korea-Nicaragua Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the two sides noted with satisfaction the
establishment of the Korean Embassy in Nicaragua and other developments in bilateral relations,
and exchanged views on ways to promote cooperation in the fields of infrastructure and new and
renewable energy, including a grand-canal construction and solar-energy generation projects.

3. In the subsequent meeting with Vice Minister Shin, the two sides agreed on the importance of
promoting cooperation in infrastructure and new and renewable energy, with Minister Santos elaborating
in detail on Nicaragua’s projects on wind-, geothermal- and solar-energy generation, followed by a request
for interested Korean firms’ investment and participation in them. Meanwhile, Vice Minister Shin asked that
the Nicaraguan government render active support for investment-diversification efforts by Korean firms and
interest in Korean residents in the country, to which Minister Santos positively responded.

4. Prior to the said meetings, Minister Santos took a tour of one of the Korea Water Resources
Corporation’s field offices on November 11 and met with executives from STX Offshore and Ship-
building and Hyundai Heavy Industries on November 11 and 12, respectively.

5. The visit to Korea by Minister Santos, who is in charge of overall foreign-investment promotion affairs,
is expected to lead to more investments in Nicaragua by Korean firms and contribute to bolstering Korea-
Nicaragua cooperative ties in other areas as well.
